The sakhi of Deep Kaur
A short translation of Deep Kaur's encounter with Mughal soldiers from Twarikh Guru Khalsa by Giani Gian Singh.
Background: This sakhi is found in Twarikh Guru Khalsa written by Giani Gian Singh. Bibi Deep Kaur was a Sikh of Guru Gobind Singh and was part of a congregation from Majha coming to see the Guru.
The sangat with folded hands told the Guru ‘Satguru, we were coming to see you when we passed the village Talban and stopped at a well nearby to draw water. Half of the group then moved on while the other half stayed behind to eat. At that time, Deep Kaur had just passed us and was going to see the sangat that left. On her way, she was surrounded by a group of Turks (Muslims) who took off one of her bangles and threw it on the ground. One Muslim then bent forward to pick it up when Deep Kaur lunged and stole his sword quickly. Despite the other Muslims also having weapons, Deep Kaur struck at them quickly. She took one to the ground and overpowered him. After drinking water, we went to see what was happening. She killed the Muslim on the ground and threw his body in the well after which we left. We then have had no news of what followed after.’ After hearing of this, the Guru and all of the Singhs thanked Deep Kaur for her bravery. She was gifted new clothes and the Guru commanded the entire sangat be a true Singhni like her.
